Visiting Tasmania with a hire car? We also have self-drive Overland Track transfers to accommodate your needs.

Many trekkers begin their Overland Track experience in Launceston, which is well served by flights from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. It is just one hour from our base in Sheffield and one of our most popular pick-up locations.

If you’re flying in and out of Launceston Airport or using the city as a base, the following transfer options are available:

Option 1: Experience Sheffield

We will either meet your flight on arrival at Launceston Airport or pick you up from your Launceston accommodation and transport you to Sheffield. You’ll spend the night in this charming Tasmanian town, with time to discover its sights and do any last-minute planning. We recommend several accommodation providers in Sheffield and there are many others you will be able to find to meet all budgets. Please note, accommodation prices are additional.

Sheffield is renowned for its murals and is a destination in itself. In fact, it was named the Tasmanian Tourist Town of the Year for 2022. It is home to a supermarket where you can pick up last-minute supplies, including gas as well as restaurants, cafes and a pub.

In the morning, we will transfer you to Cradle Mountain at 7:30 am, ensuring you get an early start on your first day of the Overland Track. We will then meet you at Lake St. Clair at the end of your trek and transfer you to Launceston or the destination of your choice. If you prefer only a one-way overland track transfer that is also possible. Bags we store and transfer for free.

Option 2: Direct to Cradle Mountain Visitor Centre from Launceston Airport

If you are arriving into Launceston Airport early in the morning and want to be transferred directly to the start of the Overland Track, this option is for you. Keep in mind that the first day of trekking is around 4 to 6 hours and the transfer from Launceston to Cradle Mountain takes around 2 hours. So ensure your flight arrives early enough that you have adequate time to comfortably reach camp during daylight hours. We will then meet you at Lake St. Clair at the end of your trek and transfer you to Launceston or the destination of your choice.

Option 3: Direct to Cradle Mountain Visitor Centre from Launceston Accommodation

We pick you up from your accommodation in Launceston in the early morning for a direct overland transport to Cradle Mountain. You will be the first group to arrive and complete the Overland Track briefing session.

If you’re not flying in and out of Launceston, we also offer transfers to and from the following major centres:

Devonport

Devonport is the closest major city to Cradle Mountain National Park and the arrival point for the Spirit of Tasmania ferry from Melbourne. Devonport Airport receives regular flights from Melbourne and the city is served by Redline Express coach services from both Hobart and Launceston. Due to its close proximity to the Overland Track trailhead, a transfer from Devonport is one of our most affordable options.

Hobart
The Tasmanian capital boasts the biggest airport in the state, with flights from most Australian capital cities and New Zealand. But its location in the south of the island means it’s also the furthest city from the Overland Track and our most expensive transfer option. If you want to save some money, you can catch the Redline Express coach service to the town of Perth (just south of Launceston) and we can pick you up there for the transfer to Sheffield or direct to Cradle Mountain.

Deloraine

Deloraine is an attractive town on the Meander River, partway between Launceston and Cradle Mountain, and is served by Redline Express coach services from Hobart, Launceston and Devonport. It’s just 40 minutes from our base in Sheffield or a little over 1.5 hours from the start of the Overland Track, making it a good option if you’re looking for an affordable transfer.

Sheffield

Sheffield is our main transfer base and just an hour’s drive from the start of the Overland Track. It’s renowned for its murals and is a destination in itself. In fact, it was named the Tasmanian Tourist Town of the Year for 2022. It is home to a supermarket where you can pick up last-minute supplies, as well as restaurants, cafes and a pub. Sheffield can be accessed by public bus from Devonport.

We understand the need for flexibility, so no payment is required at the time of booking and can be made at any time within 30 days of your departure date.
