Frenchmans Cap – Tasmania’s Iconic Wilderness Hike

Frenchmans Cap is one of Tasmania’s most iconic and rewarding multi-day hikes. Located deep within the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park, this 46 km return track takes experienced hikers through some of the most remote and dramatic wilderness in the state. The trail begins at the Franklin River trailhead on the Lyell Highway and leads to the summit of Frenchmans Cap, a striking white quartzite peak that rises to 1,446 metres and dominates the surrounding landscape.

This four-day trek is a true alpine adventure. Along the way, walkers traverse buttongrass plains, lush rainforest, steep climbs, and exposed ridgelines. The trail includes crossings of the Loddon and Franklin Rivers, and passes through areas of significant conservation and cultural importance. Two public huts—Vera and Tahune—offer simple shelter and are spaced at key points along the track, though walkers must be prepared to camp if the huts are full.

At the summit, hikers are rewarded with unforgettable 360-degree views across Tasmania’s south-west wilderness, including the Eldon Range, Denison Range, Mount Gell, and even glimpses toward Macquarie Harbour. It’s a moment of awe, solitude, and achievement in one of the most pristine environments in Australia.

Planning Your Walk
Frenchmans Cap is a serious undertaking best suited to experienced bushwalkers with good fitness. While no permit is required, walkers should register their trip with Tasmania Parks and Wildlife and carry appropriate gear for alpine conditions. Weather can change rapidly, and snow, wind, or rain can occur at any time of year.

The trailhead is located approximately 3.5 hours from Hobart and 2.5 hours from Lake St Clair. eGuide offers flexible transfers from Hobart, Launceston, or Lake St Clair to the Frenchmans Cap trailhead at Franklin River, with return options also available.
