Overland Track transport as you need it for the winter season
Walking the Overland Track in Winter: June to September
If you’re planning to walk the Overland Track between June and September, it’s worth knowing that no permit is required during this period. Winter offers a unique and peaceful experience of the track, with fewer walkers and the chance to see Tasmania’s wilderness transformed by snow and ice.
Overland Track transport is provided by eGuide on all routes but is subject to demand. We aim to organise to share overland track transport where we cna to keep costs down for everyone. Please do contact me with your date and group size david@eguide.com.au
Unlike the main season, where walkers must travel north to south, winter hikers have the flexibility to start at either Cradle Mountain or Lake St Clair and walk in either direction. This added freedom allows you to plan your route based on weather conditions, transport availability, or personal preference.
However, winter conditions can be extreme and are best suited to experienced and well-prepared hikers. Snow, ice, and freezing temperatures are common, and weather can change suddenly. Navigation may be more difficult due to snow cover, and huts can be cold and isolated. It’s essential to have the right equipment, including cold-weather gear, navigation tools, and a solid understanding of remote-area hiking.
Although permits are not needed, planning ahead is still important. We offer flexible shuttle services to and from both Cradle Mountain and Lake St Clair during the winter months and are happy to assist with advice to ensure your journey is safe and enjoyable.
If you're considering a winter walk and need help arranging transport, discussing itinerary options, or understanding the conditions, feel free to get in touch. We’re here to help year-round.
Make use of the huts
The huts remain open all winter. Waterfall Valley, Windermere and Kia Ora are all new and well insulated with heating ( but not guaranteed during the winter months).

You can walk South to North or North to South from June to September. Eguide can drop you at Cradle Mountain or at Lake St Clair and pick you up from both.
